  Distrust and paranoia among faders

  hi guys.

  i'm interested in knowing whether any other faders out there ever find themselves feeling a little paranoid about establishing contact with other faders or former jws, just in case the unthinkable happens and things turn sour.. personally, i'm now fairly comfortable with the idea that i will be disfellowshipped or disassociated within the next year or so.

  i see it as inevitable, and an essential transition in order to do what i want to do with my life.

  It is entirely understandable that you should be cautious. You need to be able to remain in control of how everything works out for you. On the other hand, it is perhaps worth reflecting upon the extent to which exJWs' experience of life within with WT movement might have led to habits which could put up barriers among member of the exJW community.

  And as a post-script, I can honestly say that if there is anyone out there who might have known me in JWs days, I would neither out you nor would I pursue any religious or political agenda.

  NWT copyright

  i notice the jw bible is copyrighted.

  are any other "holy" books copyrighted?.

  i guess that means publishing it online along with a critique would violate the copyright?.

  In the case of KJ and other old versions copyright has expried and they are in the public domain.

  Modern translations appear on the various websites by permission of the copyright holders.

  If you take a look inside the lead pages of your bibles you will find the copyright information.

  All translations are copyrighted in the normal way. That doesn't mean you can't quote from them - you simply need to attribute your quotes properly. NWT, NRSV, RV etc along with the biblical reference is all that is needed.

  Quoting long chunks is a different matter, of course, though the definition of "long" is a bit vague. In the normal course of things - writing articles, studies, critical notes and the like - there are no difficulties.

  It is the translation which is copyrighted, of course, not the original text. So you are free to make your own translation if you wish. If you do, you should acknowledge the edition of the text from which you translate.

  after spending a lifetime in it, no one is as fed up with the wt as i am.

  [my golf game would have been a hell of alot better if i was'nt banging my head against the wall on saturdays!

  lol ] this forum has taught me alot more than i thought to confirm my suspicions.

  The trouble is, if you find a church all of whose doctrines you agree with and think that it must therefore be the true church, you are psychologically committed to never changing your mind.

  If you feel the need to find a church, it is best to look for one in which a wide breadth of thinking is represented. That way, you have the freedom to use your (God-given?) intellect fully without thinking that if you discover something new you will have to move on to yet another church.

  Weird rumor I heard - JWs in Sweden

  i heard this from a "friend of a friend of a friend...." at least 3 or 4 intermediate steps before i heard it.. so it is likely distorted, but i'll throw it out there in case someone in or near sweden can clarify it.. .

  i heard that the wts branch in sweden instructed all jws there to "get rid of" all (empahasized all) of their printed literature, and rely exclusively on the content of jw.org for their literature.. .

  that's the entire extent of it - i also got a few speculations about "what it might mean" (the society is expecting persecution!

  I find it hard to imagine that the Society would issue such a directive - because donations for printed literature are a major source of finance. Stop printing, cut funding. On the other hand, local congs and circuits might wake up to the fact that they could easily reduce their outgoings by a huge margin if they decided to rely exclusively on downloaded materials.

  i resigned in the early 70's---but dithered as a guest at meetings for a few years--to keep marital peace.

  but no field service at all--honest lol.. all connection to the cult ended in jan 1981---i had an affaire with a married sister--she got d/f--but--i'm told----it was announced=--i couldnt be d/f as i was no longer a jw---but was declared to be an apostate !!.

  It was reading Studies in the Scriptures and Millions Now Living Will Never Die that finished it off for me.

  1975 was a great year for me. Late the year before, I went to University - much older, of course than most undergraduates. When I was leaving Manchester to go up to Lancaster, my mother gave me a parting gift - a diary for the next year - 1975. "You won't be able to use it all," she told me, "but at least you'll be able to use the first part."

  And afterwards, of course, they all denied having said anything about Armageddon coming in that year.

  Books that make you go hmm....

  it's occurred to me that i have been reshaped by the books i have read, taking my new knowledge for granted, and forgetting that those around me have not been on the same journey.

  as a consequence sparks fly, as iron sharpening iron, as we strive to understand each other (or to insist that we are not the same).

  there are a few books that stand out, as i refer to them over and over again.

  The Magic of Reality - Richard Dawkins. A great intorduction to scientific thinking for kids of all ages from 8 to 80

  The Map that Changed the World - Simon Winchester. The story of William Smith, an early geologist who created the first geological map of England and Wales. A great read.

  I walked out late summer of 1965, duffed later that year. Kept contact with family until early 80s. Then after my father died, who was not a JW (had been but faded), the rest broke off all contact. I guess I make it easy/inevitable for them to do that because I was accepted for ordination as a Methodist minister in 1984.

  Still not given up all hope of some sort of reconciliation with some of the family still in.
